So… What is The Penis Conundrum?

Excellent question.

It’s the debut short film from BF Media Lounge, founded by writer-director Anne-Cécile Ville — a surrealist feminist comedy about what happens when something extremely personal and wildly blown out of proportion takes over your inner world.

In this case: a penis.

Laura is a capable, composed thirty-something professional. A routine meeting with a colleague should be uneventful — until one accidental glance at his (entirely innocent) noticeable bulge triggers an internal spiral she cannot switch off.

What begins as a split-second physical response escalates into awkward arousal, guilt, and obsessive self-monitoring. As Laura’s thoughts snowball, the film exposes how quickly confidence can wobble — and how much energy women spend managing reactions they were never taught to talk about.

The result is a hilariously uncomfortable journey through repression and imagination — one that invites laughter, recognition, and relief.

Laura (Sanna Toivanen)

Laura embodies the struggle of conforming to societal norms in a patriarchal society.

Raised to suppress her intimate desires, she becomes a perfectionist, excelling at work but confined bytraditional boundaries. At home, her longing for genuine connection is stifled by fear of judgement. Thiscomplex role navigates deep emotional and comedic layers, expertly portraying the internal conflict of a woman wrestling to express her true self, while hinting at the broader challenges women face.

Chris (Nick Dutton)

Laura's boyfriend struggles with understanding women and navigating love due to being raised in a patriarchal society. He deeply loves Laura but feels insecure and inadequate. Chris embodies the male challenge of intimacy and self-worth in relationships,

Colleague (aka Penis Guy)

Laura’s colleague, informally dubbed ‘Penis Guy,’ represents the sexual desires that Laurasuppresses and fears. His presence ignites her urge to flee, not from him but from her own challenging desires.

The film blends unexpected elements with sharp narrative focus, employing a dynamic visual style. It employs bright, warm pink tones to heighten the humour, and darker tones to intensify the film's dramatic moments. The direction showcases strong performances and precise staging, with innovative camera work and lighting that spotlight both humour and drama. Notably, it introduces innovative framing to subvert the traditional male gaze into a female one, and employs a one-shot camera style for the climactic emotional scene at the end. Sound and music complement the visuals, enhancing the comedic and dramatic effects, ensuring each scene captivates and challenges the audience. Filmed indoors with only three characters in an office and apartment setting, the film strategically focuses resources to maximise cinematic impact.

Film Inspiration

The Penis Conundrum leans into absurdist humour to approach a subject usually wrapped in silence or seriousness. Visually stylised and carefully crafted, the film is designed to feel confident and intentional — not confessional.

Comedy changes our state. When we laugh, things loosen. When they loosen, confidence returns. This film entertains first — and quietly opens the door to conversations that feel easier to have once we’ve laughed together

The Penis Conundrum is a bold short film about sex, shame, and the courage to say what we really want. Through humour, vulnerability, and messy honesty, Laura confronts her desires — reflecting what so many women feel but rarely say out loud.

In a world that fuels anxiety and self-doubt, we need stories that do the opposite. This film is light without being shallow, funny without punching down — a spark to open up bigger conversations, not tie them up with a bow.

Your support helps us bring this story to life with a talented, fairly paid team — and to share it with the women who need it most.

This campaign is intentionally simple.

We believe small steps lead to big changes.

This is for women (and men!) who love bold comedy, believe in joy as a strategy, and want to be part of stories and communities that make us laugh — and feel more ourselves afterwards.

Let’s make it. Together!

Hi, I’m Anne-Cecile!

I wrote The Penis Conundrum following a day when sex was on my mind and I felt a little alone because I had no idea how normal or odd my feelings were because we, as women, rarely discuss our desires. In a world that labels us ‘crazy,’ ‘good girls,’ or ‘too much,’ expressing desire can feel risky. I wanted to change that — with humour, not shame.

My voice blends absurdity, emotional honesty, and character-driven comedy. I believe laughter should lift us up, not tear us down.

This is BF Media Lounge’s first film — on purpose. We’re building stories that connect with real women. That’s why we’re planning a YouTube Live premiere: accessible, bold, and made for conversation.
